What are the Benefits of the Certificate Program?
Whether you are new or experienced, you will benefit from the fast-track guidance of experts who have been there and know what to look for. The concentrated course-work is designed to make you aware of your leadership responsibilities, obligations and liabilities of the district as a public agency. The instructors were chosen for their expertise as policy-making board members, their knowledge of California government, and their experience in working with California local government agencies. What differentiates the Institute's instructors is that they are practicing professionals who work with local governments and special districts on a daily basis and understand the issues and concerns.
This certificate is recognition that you have received the latest, most up-to-date specialized training by leading professionals in the field of Special Districts and of your commitment to district management.
You will also receive a comprehensive workbook containing outlines and illustrations of each presentation. All materials are updated and re-written for each seminar to ensure you receive the latest information.
What is the Curriculum?
The program curriculum consists of three fundamental seminars which cover a depth of topics including: leadership, personnel policy, community relations, organization and management, financial management and control, government, legal aspects, communication, board administration and intergovernmental relations.
The certificate in Special District Leadership and Management is awarded upon the successful completion of all three seminars, which are Special District Governance, Special District Finance, and Special District Administration (Leadership and Strategic Planning).
When is the certificate program offered?
The three seminars are scheduled at times of the year appropriate for the subject matter and District agendas. The seminars are held at hotel locations where the atmosphere and accommodations are most conducive to an educational format. How do I get started?
There are no formal prerequisites for program participation. The three component seminars are scheduled at different times throughout the year and may be taken in any order. The Special District Institute Certification Program can be completed in less than one year and must be completed within three years. By attending any of the three seminars, you will automatically be enrolled as a candidate for the certificate program, and your progress will be monitored for you.
